Whether you’re escaping the everyday or celebrating a special occasion, The Barn Owl calls for you to disappear from the everyday hustle and bustle of busy life.

Inside

Inside, the hut oozes warmth and luxury. A sumptuous king-sized bed promises lazy mornings or early nights, while underfloor heating ensures year-round comfort. On arrival, you’ll find the hut stocked with tea, coffee, sugar, apple juice, locally made biscuits and fresh milk waiting in the fridge - so you can settle in and unwind from the moment you arrive. As evening falls pour a glass of something special and enjoy the quiet intimacy of this beautifully considered space.

Outside

The Barn Owl’s outdoor setting is where it truly shines. Gently bathed in the soft glow of the evening sun, this peaceful spot is perfect for lingering suppers - share a smorgasbord brimming with local cheeses and deli meats with a glass of something red as the sun settles over the fields beyond. A private seating area with table and chairs encourages relaxed al fresco dining, while the Adirondack chairs welcome snuggles with your first coffee of the day as you watch the sky ignite with the morning pastel tones of Norfolk’s famous big skies.

A private hot tub adds an extra layer of indulgence to this already special retreat - picture sinking into warm, bubbling water beneath the starry sky, surrounded by countryside calm. Guests can also choose to hire the farm’s indoor heated swimming pool and sauna.

Staying at
The Barn Owl

Quick guide to your location

If you choose to book your stay at Hill House Farm, you will find yourself stepping into the heart of the Brecks countryside, where rolling fields, open skies, and the gentle rhythm of rural life set the pace for your holiday. Here, peaceful days unfold naturally: morning light spilling across the meadows, birdsong drifting through the air, alongside Magic, the gentle resident donkey, and our small flock of chickens.

You will find everything you need nearby. East Harling offers a Co-op, a chemist, a butcher, and a baker for everyday essentials. For more extensive shopping, the towns of Diss, Thetford, and Attleborough host larger supermarkets, while Wymondham boasts a Waitrose. If you enjoy fresh, local produce, a visit to Wyken Vineyard near Stanton on a Saturday morning is a must: the Farmers Market overflows with bread, cheese, fish, meat, fruit, and vegetables. Wyken’s bistro and country store invite you to linger over a relaxed lunch or discover unique gifts and homeware.
For those who love to explore, endless walks and footpaths await: Knettishall Heath, Thetford Forest, and the historic Peddars Way all provide opportunities to wander, and feel fully present in this unique landscape. Birdwatchers will delight in identifying the local wildlife with the Merlin Bird ID app, turning the songs of the countryside into a living, immersive soundtrack.

When it comes to dining and discovery, you will find no shortage of options nearby. Local cafés and pubs, from The Market Place Café in Kenninghall to The Red Lion, The Angel, and the Nags Head and Swan in East Harling, offer hearty breakfasts, long lunches, and welcoming atmospheres. For evenings out, The Boars in Wymondham, The Mulberry in Thetford, and Wyken Vineyard provide refined and relaxed dining experiences. Traditional favourites, including Harling Fish and Chip Shop, Botestale Chinese takeaway, and Shapla Indian in Attleborough, are all within easy reach.

You will find the perfect balance here to savour the very best of South Norfolk, whatever the season.

We had a fabulous weekend at The Barn Owl Shepherds Hut. The location and facilities were brilliant. The location was family friendly and Mary was kind enough to provide garden games for my daughter. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Mary’s place was great for our visit, very welcoming, lovely surroundings and not far from a local shop. The Barn Owl was comfortable and spotless, and we appreciated the complimentary biscuits, apple juice, milk etc. Mary’s communication was great and very quick for any queries we had too!

We had a very enjoyable 2 nights in this secluded location. The accommodation is well set out, equipped and topped off with some nice welcome touches. Our regret was that we werent able to just sit and relax in the beautiful surroundings, whilst listening to the birds! Maybe next time! Recommended!
