A Dog’s Day Out: Discover the Most Dog-Friendly Beaches in norfolk
At Simply Norfolk Stays, we believe every guest deserves the luxury of fresh sea air, big skies, and salt-swept adventures – especially the four-legged ones. With its wide, unspoilt coastline and welcoming charm, Norfolk is a paradise not only for people, but for pups too.
Whether you’re strolling through dunes hand-in-paw or watching your dog dance in the shallows, these dog-friendly beaches promise a stay that’s as enriching for them as it is for you. Here are some of our favourite stretches of sand to explore with your canine companion.
Holkham Beach
Wild, Vast and Wonderfully Free
Holkham’s sweeping golden sands and pine-fringed boardwalks are iconic and for good reason. It’s the kind of place where time slows, and your dog can run until the horizon disappears.
Dogs are welcome all year round, though from April to August, some areas are marked on-lead to protect nesting birds. But the space here is boundless, so you’ll never feel restricted. Early mornings and golden hours are especially magical.
Best for: Long lead-free runs, wild beauty, peaceful walking
Good to know: A newly built boardwalk offers easier access from Lady Anne’s Drive
Wells-next-the-Sea
Iconic Beach Huts and Coastal Trails
Framed by pastel beach huts and stretching sandbanks, Wells is a charming stop on the Norfolk coast. A designated dog-free zone exists near the main entrance during summer months, but just a short walk beyond that, you’ll find open beach to roam freely.
A walk along the pine wood boardwalk or part of the Norfolk Coast Path offers a scenic start or end to your day. There’s even a dog-friendly café in the beach car park – treats for everyone!
Best for: Photo ops, coastal paths, post-walk coffee
Top tip: Head east past the signposts for unrestricted space
Old Hunstanton
Coastal Calm Without the Crowds
Just north of the more bustling main beach, Old Hunstanton offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative that’s as dog-friendly as they come.
There are no seasonal restrictions here, just soft sand, tidal pools, and dunes perfect for digging. It’s ideal for a gentle stroll or a breezy game of fetch before heading to one of the nearby pubs for lunch with your pup in tow.
Best for: Year-round off-lead freedom, family walks, nearby amenities
Dog-friendly pitstop: The Lodge Inn welcomes muddy boots and wagging tails
Brancaster Beach
Sun, Sand and Salt Marsh Magic
Beloved by walkers and waggers alike, Brancaster is a picture-perfect stretch of shoreline with soft sands and views to soak in.
While a small section enforces seasonal restrictions during nesting season (May to September), much of the beach remains open. With the nearby National Trust car park and easy access, it’s a great choice for a relaxed afternoon wander.
Best for: Easy access, scenic views, peaceful paddles
Look out for: Kite surfers adding colour to the skies above
Waxham & Sea Palling
Secluded Shores for You and Your Pup
Tucked away from the busier beach towns, Waxham is something of a hidden gem – quiet, wild, and welcoming to dogs year-round.
Just down the coast, Sea Palling offers equally generous sands, with only a small section under restriction from May to September. Both are ideal for those seeking space, serenity, and a slower pace of life with their furry friend by their side.
Best for: Peaceful isolation, off-lead freedom, dune walks
Local love: Waxham Barn café is a rustic spot for post-walk bites
Winterton-on-Sea
Where Seals and Tails Meet
With windswept dunes and a famously friendly atmosphere, Winterton is one of the most dog-welcoming beaches on the Norfolk coast. Dogs are welcome year-round, though winter visitors might also spot something extra special – seals lounging near the shoreline.
Wrap up warm between November and February and enjoy one of the coast’s most enchanting sights, with your dog sniffing along the path beside you.
Best for: Wildlife encounters, winter walks, off-season escapes
Insider tip: Visit early to avoid disturbing the seals or check local advice on where to walk
Before You Go…
A few helpful notes to make your coastal adventures smooth and joyful:
- Bring water and a lead, even to off-lead beaches, seasonal or conservation zones may require restraint.
- Check tide times – some beaches reveal vast new landscapes at low tide.
- Respect local signage and always clean up after your dog. Norfolk’s beauty is shared, and we all have a part to play in protecting it.
Stay a Little Longer
At Simply Norfolk Stays, we offer all year stays where dogs are just as welcome as humans. Think enclosed gardens and wood-burning stoves to curl up beside after a blustery beach walk.
Because your dog deserves a holiday too.
