Famous Faces in Norfolk

Share

Lights, camera, action; It’s no wonder Norfolk has long been a favourite haunt for celebrities and famous faces.  The Arts, culture, fabulous food and iconic scenery make Norfolk one of the UK’s most sought-after holiday destinations. Find out which celebs have ties to Norfolk and who’s been spotted holidaying in the area…

The Royal Family

The Sandringham Estate, purchased in 1862 by Queen Victoria as a private residence for her son, the future King Edward VII has been passed down through generations of British monarchs and continues to remain a firm favourite residence for the Royal Family.  Each Christmas locals flock to the estate to catch a glimpse of King Charles III and his family as they attend the Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the estate.  Rumour has it that the family also like to drop by, perhaps fly by would be more fitting, The Dabbling Duck in Great Massingham – keep your eyes peeled for a helicopter landing!

Stephen Fry

Renowned actor, comedian, writer, broadcaster and cherished public figure Stephen Fry has deep ties to the area.  Born in London Stephen Fry spent his upbringing in Norfolk cementing his love for the county.  He shot to fame in the 80s alongside Hugh Laurie, as the dynamic comedy duo Fry & Laurie, continuing his successful career on screen for his well-known roles in Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster, and the 1997 film Wilde where he portrayed Oscar Wild – a role that earned him critical acclaim. Recognised as a national treasure, Fry is celebrated for his wit and intelligence, and contributions to the arts and social advocacy.  Stephen still spends time in his beautiful period property in rural Norfolk and is an avid campaigner for mental health and LGBTQ+ rights.  Stephen married comedian and writer Elliot Spencer in January 2015 in Dereham, not far from their Norfolk residence.

Suranne Jones

Better known as Doctor Foster and for her leading role in the BBC One hit drama Vigil, Suranne Jones has become a household name and cheerleader for small theatres.  A regular visitor to Sheringham with her family, Jones was approached by Sheringham Little Theatre to take on the honorary role as President.  With her successful stage and screen career, Suranne continues to visit the small seaside town with her family and spend time giving back to the community.

Delia Smith

Delia Smith became a household name in the 70s with her television series Family Fare and has since carved a hugely successful career as a cook, TV presenter and writer.  Most notable to Norfolk folk, Delia is the face of the locally loved Canaries.  In 1996, together with her husband Michael Wynn-Jones they became majority shareholders of Norwich City Football Club.  Her role at Carrow Road, the clubs home stadium remains hands on, attending most matches, interacting with fans and promoting community spirit.  In a 2005 Premier League match against Man City, Delia famously flooded the pitch, shouting the famous words “where are you? Let’s be ‘avin’ you! come on!”.

Martin Shaw

Well-loved British actor Martin Shaw, best known for his roles in Judge John Deed and Inspector George Gently, has resided in Norfolk for many years.  Shaw has publicly declared his love of Norfolk, enjoying the slower pace of life it offers, away from the hustle and bustle of London.  Whilst Shaw tends to remain private with his rural Norfolk residence, he is an ambassador for nature, advocating for wildlife conservation and environmental issues.  He’s a devoted supporter of the local community, supporting campaigns, events and causes over the years.

With a patchwork of postcard worthy villages and towns, vast skies, hidden landscapes and outstanding vistas it’s no surprise famous folk flock to Norfolk.  Whether they’re sunbathing on the beach or setting up home you are sure to spot a famous face on your Norfolk travels! Don’t be astounded to see Hugh Jackman dipping his toes in the shores of Brancaster beach, or John Travolta enjoying a lobster supper in Thursford, or perhaps Jeff Goldblum at Houghton Hall….
